From May 6 to 8, 2005, The Fields Institute hosted the
Canadian Math Ed Forum. A highlight of the conference was
an outstanding lecture by Stephen Lewis (Canadian politician,
public speaker, broadcaster, and diplomat), “Deciphering Our
World,” in which he discussed “the importance of mathematics
in creating a questioning and informed public.”
I feel that my active participation in the Forum from
the time of its inception until my retirement in 2004 was
a stimulating and worthwhile experience. I always looked
forward to the Saturday meetings and the opportunity of
meeting, interacting, and sharing ideas with individuals
who have interests and responsibilities at different levels in
mathematics education. The Fields has made an important
contribution to the development of mathematics education in
Ontario (and now further afield) by organizing and hosting the
Math Ed Forum.
