He proceeded to buy all the tractor makes he’d used when he’d been farming and many he hadn’t! He bought a diesel Super Major, the first tractor I would spread muck using. We held a sale of dad’s tractors at the end of May and sold all except five along with all the vintage ploughs. One of the ones I’ve kept is that Super Major for its sentimental value. I drove him to the funeral using it with a vintage trailer.’ Another tractor that wasn’t sold was a Massey Ferguson 165. It also holds special memories for Barry. ‘It was from John Henry Gill Agricultural Machinery and I’ve kept it because it was my mother who bought it when times were hard on the farm in the 70s. Dad had a lot of extra expenses around that time relating to family matters. He and I had a pact that the tractor would never be sold. I had mixed emotions about letting all the rest go but I couldn’t physically look after them all and they took up a fair chunk of space in the sheds that I need to continue making an income so Tommy, Lucy and the future generations can carry on living here. It’s nice to think that those who came to the sale will enjoy their purchases as much as dad did. He was a great dad and grandad.’
