Fellthorpe Clarry at last year ’ s national show in Staffordshire . Winning the turnout class at the Great Yorkshire Show with his yellow cart has been another of Richard ’ s high points so far , but he also gets pleasure from turning out with wagons , flatbeds and carts for weddings and other special occasions for friends and family . Richard enjoys the harp back to when his mum ’ s side of the family the Elvidges had horses .
“ There ’ s history with them as my grandad on mum ’ s side won numerous trophies with Shires at the local show . The Shires are such a great spectacle wherever you go .”
Richard studied at Bishop Burton College and spent time in America where he worked on a ranch in Wyoming . It fitted well with his days when he watched TV at home with his dad .
“ I ’ ve always had a love of horses and being over there was just like those days when I watched John Wayne westerns as a kid . These Shires are a lot bigger though and are tremendous to watch and be around .”
Richard is married to Alison who is a paediatric nurse at Hull Royal Infirmary . The family is very sporty . Richard played football throughout his teens and twenties . Alison played netball and their three daughters Jessica , Emily and Molly all still play the sport . Jim is married to Margaret who comes from Bentley near Beverley . They were chairman and secretary of Beverley YFC . They also have an elder son , also Jim , who has a poultry and beef business on the Wolds and a daughter Helen .
