The Croft Arable Event:
Major northern variety trials
now partnered by Argrain
» » FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW CROFT
Farms have been hosting the premier varietal
trials in the North East.
This year sees a new three-way
collaboration including agricultural merchants
Argrain, bringing over 40 years of growing
and marketing experience, and NIAB
TAG who have operated their North East
agronomy group and crop trials on the site for
over 20 years.
This year in particular has seen a large
number of new varieties of wheat, barley and
oilseed rape make it onto the Recommended
List. NIAB TAG have experts on hand to
discuss the agronomic differences in all these
varieties with the help of strip plots grown on
site, giving farmers probably their first look at
some of these new names.

Together with Croft Farms, Argrain have
chosen a range of varieties which have
been grown in 24 metre farm scale plots to
demonstrate how these perform in a more
commercial situation. These have been
chosen not only for their characteristics
and yield, but also for their marketability.
Representatives from both Argrain and the
Plant Breeders will be on hand for the plot
tours, to discuss not only the growing crops,
but also the market potential of quality
varieties.
Whether you grow premium bread wheats
or are looking for the most suitable barn filler
on the marker, the wealth of professional
knowledge and advice available on the day
will help you choose the right varieties for
your farm. Argrain can then source seed from
our range of suppliers throughout the country
to ensure you get the quality seed you need
when you need it. Their seed expert, Lucy
Thornton, will be on hand all day and at the
trials to help with any enquiries, give advice
and take orders. Lucy covers all aspect of
their seed trade from advertising to final
delivery so is always available to help with
any queries.
Argrain have also arranged for a number
of trade stands on the day covering seed,
fertiliser, feedstuffs and a good range of
machinery suppliers and professionals.
There is also the opportunity to bring along
your grain moisture meters to the Argrain
Clinic for calibration and certification prior to
harvest. Entrance on the day is free, as are
refreshments and Hog Roast!
