The Great Yorkshire Show
Farmers to meet British Wool
representatives at shows across North
Understanding the importance of rural events, British Wool representatives
are always keen to engage with producers and future farmers to
help them better understand how British Wool operates.
» » AT THE VARIOUS SHOWS
this year, British Wool’s display
stands will be located in prime
locations near the sheep pens
or the fleece competition areas,
where producers can meet
representatives to discuss the
organisation’s involvement in all
aspects of the industry.
Agricultural shows provide
producers with a great
opportunity to meet and
socialise, but there is an
important business element too
and British Wool is all too well
aware that producers want to
know more about what their
wool is worth in the coming
season, said acting producer
communications manager
Lauren Boulton.
“We’ll be explaining the
latest wool values and helping
farmers understand what they
can do to maximise the value of
their clip. British Wool is unique
in UK agriculture and it is in
producers’ interests to support
the organisation in its work to
sell British wool on their behalf
to buyers across the world,” she
adds.
Ms Boulton said that in
addition to learning more about
the work of British Wool, visitors
to some of BW show stands
including the Great Yorkshire
Show 11th – 13th July, will also
be able to try their hand at an
‘Identify the Breed’ competition,
with entrants having to identify
fleeces from six different
breeds of sheep.
“The start of the 2017 show
season also see British Wool’s
National Golden Fleece
competition run for the second
year, sponsored by JG Animal
Health. Registered wool
producers are encouraged
to enter via the network of 11
British Wool grading depots,
where fleeces will be judged
in two categories – traditional
carpet and speciality/knitwear.
The closing date for depot
entered fleeces is 31st October
2017. Champion fleeces from
14 nominated agricultural
shows across the UK will
automatically be entered in the
competition.
The winner will receive a
competition salver and £500,
reserve £250. All finalists will
receive £125 product vouchers
from JG Animal Health and will
be invited to a presentation
ceremony in November.
