CREATING a better working environment, www.brmltd.co.uk [email protected] 01325 378552 ‘Service is our business’ creating better conditions for their cows and in so doing hopefully improving long term prospects has been at the heart of the moves made by brothers William and Rich- ard Houseman at Ingerthorpe Moor Farm in Markington since they put up new purpose built cattle sheds and reinvested in all areas of the dairy farm seven years ago. Brian Robinson Machinery are proud to have supplied William Houseman with a range of agricultural machinery. BRM wish the Houseman family all the best for the future. R.E.BUILDINGS BOBMAN BEDDING MACHINES Leaders in buildings & equipment AGRICULTURAL BUILDINGS & LIVESTOCK EQUIPMENT Any self respecting dairy farmer visiting cannot fail to be impressed as William draws up the roll down doors to reveal as contented a milking herd as I have seen in recent years with hundreds of cows looking as one down at you entering their pleasant, airy domain. ‘We wanted somewhere better for the cows and us,’ says William. ‘We were tired of getting wet and damp, of AI-ing cows outside and now they are all pretty much together on one site, they are a lot health- ier, mastitis and foot problems are way down.’ The Housemans have totally redesigned their dairy operation with the new cow shed, a new milking parlour, slurry lagoon, bulk tank and washing area. It has been a huge investment and they have taken cow numbers from 350 to around 500. ‘We are a closed herd and we breed all our own replacements. We look to breed a midsize cow that is pedigree but commer- cially minded. There’s nothing that is an extreme Holstein here. Our herd average is around 10,000 litres. We aim to calve new calvers at two years old serving with sexed semen twice. We have an Angus bull that runs with them after. The cows are served Scrape, Sweep and Spread in one pass.
