We’ve had a very good uptake and that’s because we’re using real Jersey milk. We supply wholesale to shops, hotels and farm shops and we take stands at Wensleydale Show and Moor- cock Show as well as other special events. We’ve already seen a lot of return or repeat customers and we are looking forward to opening our ice cream parlour when we have the resources. Planning took forever but we have got that now.’ Grants are meant to be readily available for great ideas like Adrian and Gillian’s and they are trying. ‘We have applied for a LEADER grant. It’s taken us three years and an awful lot of money to get planning passed and it will take a considerable sum to get the build- ing kitted out and a new access road and car park put in, but when it is completed it will bring eight new jobs and a great new attraction.’ Manor Farm’s farming operation runs to 163 owned acres with 40 rented. Land includes disadvantaged, severely disadvantaged and Natural England rented acreages but it’s not a purely grassland farm as many are in Wensleydale. The Harrisons grow wheat and whole crop wheat as well as their silage crops. Prior to FMD year the farm comprised 50 black and white dairy cows and 250 Mule sheep. Adrian’s parents are Maurice and Ann. He has two brothers Chris who is gamekeeper at Swinithwaite and and Robert who is a land agent in Preston. Gillian and Adrian have two children – Annabel (18) who is studying midwifery in Newcastle and James (16) who has just started at Newton Rigg. ‘We stopped showing in 2010 but James has just started again. We have a man from Wales who has started working here as dairyman and he has a young lad of 7 years old. He’d asked if he could borrow a calf to show and that led to James giving it a go at Wensleydale Show this year. Who knows? We might get the bug again.’ ‘We’ve been at this farm since the 1970s since we moved from Coverdale. I was a member of Wensleydale YFC and studied at Askham Bryan College with Gillian’s brother. Gillian is a farmer’s daughter from Redmire.’ Adrian’s release from the farm is found in motorbike trialling with Richmond Motor Club and Darlington. ‘I’ve a Vertigo 300cc. James enjoys it too and has a 250cc. There’s a lot of skill in it and it’s great for forgetting about work for a while.’ Calf Feeding & Rearing Equipment Proud supplie suppliers s to Adrian A drian Harrison of Manor Farm Coverbridge Farm, East Witton, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, DL8 4SQ Tel: 01969 623522 Email: [email protected] Visit: gea.com Proud to be associated with Adrian Harrison at Manor Farm A comprehensive, friendly veterinary service 24 hour emergency service Modern vets with traditional values 01969 650263 | www.bainbridgevets.co.uk
