• OCT/NOV 2018 75675 - Neil J Bland Chartered Surveyor - QUTR.pdf 1 05/09/2018 12:09:06 STOTT HALL FARM 31 NEIL J BLAND Ltd RURAL PRACTICE CHARTERED SURVEYORS AND AGRICULTURAL VALUERS C M Y There is a myth that Mr Wild stood firm against the planners of the M62 refusing to move when the new road was proposed and then built but Paul tells the real story. ‘There was and is a geological fault which meant the road was always going to be split at that point. Mr Wild didn’t have the option of leaving or staying as it wasn’t his farm and he would have not received any payment if he had moved, so that’s why he stayed put.’ Lambing on such a scale as Paul, Casey and Jill have to cope with extends through from April 1 to very nearly the Great York- shire Show with halfbreds and what he considers will be the better ones starting first. The White-faced Woodlands start April 25 and along with the Grits and Lonks gen- erally run through to June. ‘We’ll try for what we hope will be the better ones early because you don’t want late born lambs up against March-borns. You may as well leave them at home when you’re showing because no matter how good they are they will be too small to stand up against the bigger ones. Half the size is half the sheep. I’m also happy to see every ewe put to tup coming up with one strong healthy lamb.’ ‘We sell live mainly through Holmfirth livestock mart and sometimes take store cattle to Skipton. Our breeding sheep go to Clitheroe and Gisburn. I have a loyalty to Holmfirth and the buyers have that same loyalty too. It’s a good little market and there aren’t so many like it left so we all 75657 - HolmfirthAuctionMart - 8TH.pdf 1 05/09/2018 CM need to look after those that are still here.’ They use Pennine Animal Feeds for all their animal feeds which undoubtably con- tributes to the quality of their livestock. Paul was chairman of the White-faced Woodland breed society until just over a year ago and pays much credit to its com- mitted committee. ‘There has been a lot of work done regard- ing the breed to get it off the endangered list working on the traceability and parentage lines going back three generations of ped- igree on both sides. Years ago information was all in farmers heads and diaries but now everything is recorded and if you go through a rare breeds book you can work from a three-generation parentage on either side.’ ‘My granddad used to keep them and so did both Ryder Howard who I worked for and Geoff Dowie, who I served my ap- prenticeship with at Woodhead in Glossop. As regards a hill sheep the White-faced Woodland is up there with the Gritstone and the Lonk. It has far better wool quality than most hill sheep and a good solid carcase that weighs heavy. We had an exceptional start to the year selling lambs at £90-£100.’ Paul is in stewardship and has a scheme for Twite recovery through the RSPB. He’s happy with his sheep and cattle. ‘I was always told do what you do and keep doing it as there’s no point running off too far one way because in another couple of years you’ll be wanting to be back where you were. If you think you’re doing the job half right keep doing it.’ 11:20:49 MY CY CMY K TENANCY MATTERS SALES OF RURAL PROPERTY & LAND VALUATIONS Applicaon and advice for DEFRA and other schemes.
