heard about it our daughter Kelly was look-
ing to work on the farm and it enabled us
to have enough work for her too. Caroline,
Kelly and I all work together.’
‘When the calves come in they are on
milk starting at two litres fed twice a day.
That goes up to four, five and then six litres
before we start knocking the intake down
again. They are also fed wheat and barley
in nuts and are all on straw. We’re looking
at the possibility of putting up other sheds
to increase our volume as Buitelaar is look-
ing to grow its business because Morrisons
want to treble supply. They’re also looking
for others to fatten them to no more than a
year old and 420 kilos. We are happy with
them as small calves. They may require a
little more work when they are young, but
it is manageable.’
‘Our pigs come in at 40 kilos in batches
of 400 and are taken through to bacon
going in to Malton Bacon Factory. We had
sows of our own years ago but came out
of breeding pigs in 2001, which is when
we went B&B. We’ve had calves on and
off over the years before the Buitelaar
contract.’
‘The sheep are a mix of Swaledale and
Scottish Blackface ewes put to either a
Texel X Charollais tup or a Swaledale X
Texel. We buy a few Swaledales every now
and again at Fadmoor Annual Sheep Sale.
Our lambing time is from 10 April for three
weeks and our fat lambs go to market in
January weighing 44-46 kilos.’
The arable land at South Wold is largely
heavy clay with flint and chalk that can get
a bit lighter.
‘It’s not as good Wolds land as you will
find in somewhere like Foxholes. We’re
just over 900ft here but we do grow good
crops. Our current winter wheat variety
is Gator which should average around
3.5 tonnes per acre and better in a good
year. We produce malting barley growing
Concerto and we grow 35 acres of potatoes
that go to Wolds Produce of Pocklington.
We grow a lot of seed potatoes for them
too. Caroline is one of their truck drivers.’
Caroline’s family the Dickinsons were
farmers. Tim’s parents Dennis and Anne
came to South Wold in 1967 from another
tenanted Halifax Estates farm at Painsthor-
pe. They now live in Bugthorpe.
‘I joined them on the farm when I was 16
and I’ve worked here ever since. We’ve kept
it quite similar really and our future expan-
sion is more likely to come through what
we do with the calves and Buitelaar than
anything else.’
Kelly had reasonable success at show
jumping and competed at BSJ level travel-
ling all over the UK. The family still have a
horse, but they are also into horsepower
motorcycle and truck wise as you can see
pictured here. All three have great mo-
torcycles and they enjoy attending truck
shows and live music – notably it must be
said in regularly coming to see the Chris
Berry Band!
