Buitelaar makes its mark on Wolds farm

ONE of the best attended farm open days in recent months took place at South Wold Farm atop Garrowby Hill between Bishop Wilton and Kirby Underdale in the spring at the home of Tim and Caroline Wardle .
Tim and Caroline ’ s farm enterprise includes around 300 acres of arable land growing winter wheat , winter and spring barley and potatoes . They also run a flock of 200 breeding ewes on 90 acres of Daleside land and have pigs on B & B for Yorkshire Farmers Livestock Marketing , but it was their rearing of calves for Buitelaar that saw 130 farmers throng to take note of what the company is striving to achieve through farms such as the Wardles .
‘ We have calves arrive here at three weeks old ,’ says Tim . ‘ We rear them to 12 weeks and they are 150-160 kilos when they leave us destined for farms that fatten them further and take them to finish before going to Morrisons . They are mostly Belgian Blues . We get good results achieving the target weight gain of 1.1 kilos per day .’
‘ The majority of stock comes from dairy herds and we ’ ve been growing them here for four years . We have 300 at any one time kept in two batches of 150 . When one group has been with us six weeks they are moved into the other shed and the new batch moves in . We look after 1200 calves per year . It ’ s a good system and when we
