STEPPING out at Selby Livestock Auc- tion Mart every week alongside his long- time friend and auctioneer Chris Clubley and keeping in step when showing cattle at Christmas and Easter fatstock shows and summer agricultural shows are much easier to handle than when Jeremy Waind of Riverhouse Farm in Brawby near Malton was being regularly sidestepped in rugby at school in Barnard Castle. In his defence the fly half he was de- tailed to tackle was Rob Andrew and the team also contained Rory Underwood. ‘I started as a wing forward and ended as a winger, but nothing like Rory. I could never lay a hand on Rob, but my win brother Richard and I both went on to play for Malton.’ Jeremy may not have had the stellar ca- reer enjoyed by his two old schoolmates, but he and partner Marilyn Tate have had their share of success in the commercial cattle rings. Today the farm operation at Brawby that saw Jeremy’s arrival at Riverhouse Farm in the mid-1990s is run across around 75 acres all down to grass and sees the couple with a herd of 40-plus suckler cows and store cattle bought-in at around 14 months and sold around 21 months. ‘We’ve built up our acreage over the years,’ says Jeremy. ‘I don’t like any less than 400 cattle on at any one time and Marilyn doesn’t like more than 300, so we have 399. Butchers tend to want the better end of the continentals and that’s what we try to supply. They like them fairly fit with plenty of meat on and some good fat cover. We share a stock Limousin bull with Marilyn’s brother Martyn and have a Belgian Blue that we acquired from Roland Mason.’ ‘Most of the beasts we buy are sin- gle sucklers mainly out of Darlington, Bakewell and Brecon marts. We tend to find the younger they are the more trouble they can sometimes be.
