SIMMENTALS have become the new
passion for Keith Clark and his son Nick in
the past eight years at Croome Farm, near
Sledmere where the family has farmed
since Keith’s grandfather Watson Parkin
Clark moved from Kirkby Grange between
Sledmere and Duggleby where he had
farmed with his brothers since 1910.
‘The farm business was known as Clark
Brothers but it was grandfather who was
the main brains behind it,’ says Keith.
‘When they passed away in the 60s it was
my father Cyril and his brother, my uncle
Ernest who took over at Croome until he
bought a farm in Pocklington. I took over
the tenancy when my father died in 1984
but I’d been running it for a while before
due to dad’s dementia. I’m 75 now and
Brian my brother is a partner in the farm
business, but it’s Nick who now runs the
farm and is in the process of taking over
the tenancy.’
‘We used to have milk cows when I was
still at school and had pigs, sheep and
cattle on this predominantly arable farm of
412 acres. For a while we went down to just
sheep as our only livestock operation, but
when I had a gall bladder operation in 2000
we sold the sheep. It turned out a blessing
