FAR WORTSHILL FARM 51 • FEB/MAR 2019 ANDREW HIRD CATTLE HOOF TRIMMER BASED IN BARNSLEY 28 YEARS EXPERIENCE Dutch Diploma Cat 1 Professional CALL 07780 661319 Foot trimming for Neil and Jacqui for many years at Far Wortshill Farm. Member of the National Association of Cattle Foot Trimmers ‘Our focus is on getting maximum value from the 2500 litres our cows produce every day and that is via the doorstep, through milk, skimming and making cream sales to restaurants and farm shops. Our market is all within an 8-mile radius in- cluding Brighouse, Fartown Huddersfield, Slaithwaite and Marsden. Sam has his own round as I did. M&M Sykes who were dairy farmers gave up around a decade ago and now have five milk rounds and we supply 12 independent milk retailers.’ ‘We bottle full fat, semi skimmed and skimmed milk. The cream to bakeries, restaurants and farm shops is big busi- ness. In the old days we used to skim the milk for cream and throw the skim away. When we upscaled 10-15 years ago we were skimming milk for the skimmed milk and had surplus cream so we actively went out and found markets for it. We now supply major businesses in the area such as Bolster Moor Farm Shop who are a massive customer and De Sandro Italian restaurant in Huddersfield. We also supply milk and cream for Dixons Ice Cream in Huddersfield.’ The Briggs have a team of eight full timers with ex-dairy farmers from the area adding their experience to Neil’s. Sam coming in to the family business wasn’t exactly a surprise but it has clearly given Neil and Jacqui even greater impetus. They are used to the roar of engines whether metaphorically in driving their business or on the race track! ‘Sam was out with me and the cows when he was 4 years old,’ says Neil. ‘And he’s also developed the same love of stock car racing as Jacqui and I, which is how we met in our teens. Jacqui’s from Bury and we met at Rochdale Stadium. I’ve raced for 30 years and Sam has fol- lowed. He finished in the top 20 drivers in the UK last season in the Brisca Formula 2 class.’ Neil is also a passionate Bradford Bulls fan. He and Jacqui have three other chil- dren – Sara (30), Hannah (25) and Gemma (21). Sam’s girlfriend Amy also helps with the business.
