MACHINERY 63 • DEC/JAN 2019 SsangYong Musso Wins ‘Best Value Pick-Up’ in 4X4 Magazine’s Pick-Up of the Year Awards THE SsangYong Musso pick-up has been named as the ‘Best Value Pick-up’ in 4x4 magazine’s Pick-up of the Year awards and follows on from the SsangYong Rexton win- ning the ‘Best Value Off-roader’ and ‘4x4 of the Year 2018’ awards in 4x4 magazine earlier this year. Established over 25 years ago, 4x4 magazine’s 4x4 of the Year awards have become recognised as the leading experts’ verdict on the best vehicles in the SUV, pick- up and off-road market. The awards are based on continuous testing over the 12 months leading up to the awards issue. Journalists assess each vehicle comprehensively, looking at everything from interior quality and cabin comfort to off-road ability and performance, both laden and unladen. They also pay attention to things such as value for money and running costs, which really matter to pick-up buyers in the real world. SsangYong Musso The all-new SsangYong Musso pick-up arrived in the UK in the summer and is already disrupting the fast-growing pick-up mar- ket as a tough, strong and val- ue-for-money 4x4. Built on the same architecture as the new Rexton - which has already been awarded ‘4x4 of the Year 2018’ by 4x4 magazine - Musso shares its body-on-frame construction to give an extremely strong vehicle that delivers excel- lent off-road driving performance and safety from its quad-frame and four-wheel-drive system. The new Musso is an extremely competent multi-purpose truck with SsangYong values to the core - comprehensively equipped, a sector leading 7-year/150,000- mile warranty with a value for money package, plus a surprising level of interior refinement and great infotainment. Designed to carry passengers in comfort and transport loads securely, the SUV-based Musso combines a five-seat crew-cab body style with a workman-like load deck that will take a full- sized Euro pallet. It also carries a payload of over 1-tonne and tows trailers of up to 3.5 tonnes concurrently to give the highest total load capacity in the segment. This combination of utility pick-up and SUV means Musso offers the perfect blend of functionality, practicality, performance and comfort to the driver and family or workmates. Musso is powered by the same e-XDi220 engine found in the Rexton and delivers a maximum power of 181ps at 4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 400Nm at 1,600 to 2,600 rpm. It is available with either a 6-speed manual or an Aisin 6-speed automatic with its success proven by SsangYong and several other automotive brands. THE NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE THE original luxury compact SUV has got even better. At home both in the city and the country, the new Evoque joins the Range Rover family with a choice of hybrid-electric engines. Having pioneered the luxury compact SUV market, with global sales of over 772,096 (20% sold in the UK) and more than 217 international awards, the new Range Rover Evoque is a sophisticated evolution of the original. Combining unrivalled Range Rover heritage with cutting-edge technol- ogy – designed, engineered and manu- factured in Britain – it meets the needs of today’s customers. The outstanding volume and proportions are amplified by its pronounced shoulders and powerful wheelarches that, alongside new 21-inch wheels, combine to create a strong and dynamic attitude. The introduction of jewel-like elements such as super-slim Matrix LED headlamps provide a more sophisticated front and rear lamp graphic. Flush door handles add to the smooth, sculpted aesthetic, while sweeping directional indicators create a purpose- ful signature. Optional R-Dynamic details and burnished copper accents add to the unique appeal. The Evoque has been developed for electrification, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid available at launch and a plug-in hybrid model offered around 12 months after- wards. The mild hybrid powertrain is a first for Land Rover and works by harvesting energy normally lost during deceleration thanks to the engine-mounted belt-inte- grated starter generator, storing it in the under-floor battery. At speeds below 11mph (17km/h), the engine will shut off while the driver applies the brakes. When pulling away, the stored energy is redeployed to assist the engine under acceleration and reduce fuel consumption. The result is a refined, quiet and efficient drive in built-up traffic heavy areas, in addition to efficiency savings. Available across the range (when speci- fied with automatic gearbox) of four-cylin- der Ingenium petrol and diesel engines, the mild hybrid delivers CO2 emissions from as low as 149g/km and fuel economy from 50.4mpg (based on the new NEDC Equiva- lent WLTP test procedure). If the customer chooses the 150PS diesel engine with front wheel drive, Evoque only emits 143g/km. An even more efficient plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model and three-cylinder petrol Ingenium engine will also join the range next year. Nick Rogers, Executive Director, Prod- uct Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “Underneath the skin is an engineering and technical revolution. The architecture is all-new to accommodate both plug-in and mild hybrid systems, with only the door hinges remaining unchanged on the body. The chassis has been significantly reworked to make the most of the stiffer body, en- suring the characteristic ride comfort and refinement of a Range Rover.” www.landrover.co.uk
