62 GRANGE FARM DEC/JAN 2019 • farmers-mart.co.uk demand for is fleece. Although this doesn’t benefit David directly he’s that breeders are finding additional income from the breed. ‘Masham wool is certainly becoming worth more. I kept one Masham gimmer taking it to hogg and a friend sold the fleece for me to America for £50. That kind of money is around the right mark because of its long staple and lustre. Teeswater fleeces are even more in demand attracting £80- £100.’ ‘ The land at Stean Moor runs to just over 3000 acres and we have hefted flocks of Dalesbred and Swaledale ’ While the Swaledale is now much more numerous than the Dalesbred since their split in 1925 David is still, like his father was before him, of the belief that it scores high- er than the Swaledale. ‘The Dalesbred in my opinion has better conformation than the Swaledale. That is born out by the excellent trade we have with the Mashams. We have also tried putting the Blue Faced Leicester tup to the Dalesbred to create the Dales Mule. It hasn’t proven itself quite yet bu it is gaining in conformation.’ ‘We lamb the Dalesbred X Teeswaters first followed by the Dalesbred pures. We tup a bit earlier than most around October 20 so that the Mashams that hit the ground from March 20 are a bit stronger, bigger and better for September. Dad always said we’d come unstuck one day by going too early, but we’ve kept to it and it seems to work for us.’ ‘Once we’ve finished down here it’s lamb- ing time at Stean. We run somewhere in the region of 1100 breeding ewes altogether as we also have Swaledales up there. It’s a very high farm running to 1890 ft on Stean Moor and suits the Mules we produce. We are about half Dalesbreds and half Swaledales overall with the Mules up there and Mashams here. The land at Stean Moor runs to just over 3000 acres and we have hefted flocks of Dalesbred and Swaledale. We’re fortu- nate to have hefted sheep gates too. There’s around 180 acres of in-bye also running up to Longside Moor and Stean Moor.’ There is also has a suckler herd of around 40 Limousin X Friesian cattle that David is twice crossing with the Belgian Blue and Limousin.
