‘We have 750 Dalesbred ewes of which 250
are tupped by the Dalesbred and the other
500 are tupped by the Teeswater. We buy
Dalesbred tups from the breed sale at Ben-
tham livestock market. It’s all we buy in as
we breed our own Dalesbred replacements
and have our own flock of Teeswaters to
produce tups. Dad line bred them and kept
everything closely bred, which has meant
we have managed to get by without buying
fresh blood from elsewhere. We have a flock
of 30 pure Teeswater ewes.’
‘We’ve always sold all our Mashams
every year as gimmers at the breed sales.
Bentham is again the best place to sell as
they get the buyers coming up from the
south. We also sell at Skipton. The Masham
shearling breed sale will be held at CCM
Skipton in 2019. We make a point of going
and I specifically go because of my role,
but as we sell all the gimmers and have no
need to buy we are watchful, interested
spectators.’

‘Our Mashams sold at Bentham go
predominantly to Cornwall and Devon
as breeding ewes where they are subse-
quently crossed with he likes of Charollais,
Charollais X, Down or other continental
tups to produce quality lean carcases as
butchers’ lambs, some also go across to the
salt marshes around Morecambe.’
