IAN WILKINSON HEADED for Pickering to meet Mark Harryman & Sarah Warriner of Swainsea Barn Farm .
It is also home to home to sarah ’ s family Trevor Val Stephen and Andrew who have some 300 acres of Arable with Beans , Wheat , Barley and Oats along with 100 beltex cross ewes and their jewel in the crown for the past 12 years 24,000 free range laying hens who supply the eggs to McDonald ’ s for Breakfast Muffins .
Sarah and Mark only met some three years ago at Countryside Live when both were showing cattle . It was certainly a whirlwind romance as within a year in September 2014 Mark had upped sticks from Cumbria and joined Sarah at Swainsea Barn . Sarah has a daughter Chloe who will be 5 in February and they now have a happy lively little fella in the shape of William who will be one on the 24th January . Already William is embracing farming to the full as he loves going to shows and particularly the sales at Carlisle .
The move was quite a big step for Mark to make as at the time as he was running the family Keskadale herd of Pedigree Limousin ’ s and Limousin – Cross sucklers along with his father . Mark has a wealth of experience and knowledge as he began his showing career at the age of seven ! He has been breeding Pedigree Limousin ’ s for 20 years . Mark had always wanted to start his own herd from scratch so meeting Sarah presented the ideal opportunity .
For the past three years , Mark and Sarah have been developing their “ HotShot ” pedigree herd of Limousins which comprises at the moment of 12 Pedigree Limousin cows 10 ex show heifers which has been kept to bred show calves and 20 cross bred heifers to calve and sell on with 6 weeks old calves at foot , calving starts around 5 march .
Mark is passionate about breeding and believes you have to have a good eye for a beast and always know the breeding lines . Mark told me : “ You need to know your bloodlines to know which Bulls will click
