the 70s when the tenant retired and my father asked me to take it on . Oneholmes and the land in Scotland , is now owned by our son , James who works up there too .’
Wheat , barley , oilseed rape and grass is grown at Oneholmes where there is also a flock of 300 breeding ewes and around 50 suckler cows . Wheat varieties this year were Scout , Leeds and Gator ; winter barley varieties were Glacier , Tower and Volume . Everything is grown for feed . The sheep are Grey Faces – Scottish Blackface X Blue Faced Leicester – with a few Texels for tup production . The farm in Scotland is all grass with a flock of 1500 mostly Grey Faces , but we are experimenting with the New Zealand Romney breed .
‘ The suckler herd we have at Oneholmes started with Salers . I went into the breed because its maternal prowess was the best we could find at the time . We ’ re now using Angus X and Hereford X Salers
