Tancred Farm Shop
One Hullah
of a lot of
work goes
into Tancred’s
success!
Chris Berry talks with Dean
Hullah near Whixley
» » UNDERSTANDING THE
work involved in running a farm,
being a regular attendee of
farmers’ markets and managing
your own farm shop is enough
to deter most from adding the
latter two to their existing farm
operation: but Dean Hullah
and his wife, Angela have
succeeded - not just in keeping
everything on the right lines,
but also in creating a fabulous
reputation for their produce.
I visit Dean and Angela’s
Tancred Farm Shop near Green
Hammerton and Whixley, just
off the A59 York-Harrogate
road several times a year to
stock up on their Lincoln Red
beef, which is consistently
succulent and of fabulous
quality; in fact, we have become
shin beef connoisseurs – and
their sausages are sensational
- as is the pork; daughter Mary
now knows how to make fried
bread to go with my full English
in their coffee shop!
The heavy workload
required to run all
three enterprises,
plus Angela’s outdoor
catering with hog
roasts, means long
hours, considerable
set-up times, maintaining
standards everywhere
and requires nothing
short of 100 per cent
commitment.
‘I love farmers’ markets and
food festivals,’ says Dean.
‘They’re hard work getting
ready and every day you’re
up on your feet but I enjoy the
camaraderie of other traders
and you meet your customers.
