speaking competition at Northern Area
and was joint junior member of the year in
the East Riding. James won the junior dairy
stockjudging at Northern Area.’
Today the Southwells’ and Chapmans’
dairy herd averages 9,258 litres with 18
cows rated excellent and 40 very good. The
majority of the herd is put to Holstein se-
men with Andrew carrying out the AI work.
One third of the herd is put to the Belgian
Blue X Hereford or an Angus with bull calves
going to Dawn Meats at Carnaby around
15-16 months.
Andrew is from a farming family in Folk-
ton near Filey and likes his Mistresses! It’s of
course another cow family and he showed
Huntholme Galaxy Mistress 4 at Driffield.
‘I brought her into the herd when my
cousin Alan packed up dairying a Langtoft.
He had two left and she was one of them.
She looked really special this year after
having calved in April, so we took her.’

Joanne and Andrew rated the best they’d
ever had never got going again after calving

livestock committee positions to encourage

The sheep flock at Hunt Hill Farm runs to
Suffolks and Texels.
Joanne’s position as a teacher at Driffield
Church of England primary school teaching
foundation stage children has brought her
more aware of the need to teach not just
children but parents and teachers about the
countryside, food, livestock and crops.
‘It’s amazing how little everyone knows
about where food comes from and what
farming is all about. Andrew brought a
trailer into our school to show them calves,
ewes and lambs and it made a great impact.
When you have adults asking whether a
chicken grows into a turkey you know just
how much education is needed.’
