IT was another good Great Yorkshire Show; the weather was extremely hot and sun ny which made it a great day out for those visiting. The breed saw some great success in several classes this year, they were Re- serve Champions in the Natives Blythewood Trophy. This was the third time in 4 years that our pair have featured – they were Champions in 2015 and Reserve Cham- pions in 2016 & 2018. In the Interbreed Groups, the Lincoln Red was pulled out into the top 6 out of 17 entries. When Mr Donald Biggar was judging the Interbreed Groups he commented over the Tannoy that he thought the Lincoln Red Bull was one of the best at the show. There was a good turnout in all classes, with excellent judging. It made for a very enjoyable show this year, and great show for the breed. It was an excellent showcase for the breed, which is regarded as one of the best native breeds that can convert grass to meat, which also tastes great especially with a Yorkshire pud or two. Into the future for milking The latest in robotic milking was seen in action for the first time in the UK at the Great Yorkshire Show in July. The Lely Astronaut A5 marks a new milestone in robotic milking, with cow comfort at the heart of its design, and was unveiled in the live milking parlour at the show. DEVELOPMENT of new machine follows an extensive worldwide test programme by Lely, with more than two million milkings. Lely first demonstrated live milking at the show in 2016, with a purpose-built dairy unit constructed close to the cattle lines. This has proved a popular attraction not only for dairy farmers but for anyone who wants to understand more about the dairy industry. The Astronaut A5 features a new hybrid arm developed to be silent and more ac- curate, resulting in more comfortable cows and consistent milking. It follows the cow’s movement during milking and corrects itself in the case of any unexpected movement. The Astronaut A5 has also been designed to achieve a significantly lower total cost per kg of milk produced, through more ROYAL SEAL OF APPROVAL HER Royal Highness The Princess Royal was a very special guest on the second day of the 160th Great Yorkshire Show. Show Director Charles Mills took Her Royal Highness on a tour of the Show after being presented with a White Rose button hole by seven-year-old Adele Ze- brauskaite. She watched showjumping in the Main Ring and visited the Craven Heifer sculpture on the President’s Lawn and met sculptor Emma Stothard. The Great Yorkshire Show’s Chief Cattle Steward Margaret Chapman, who was pre- sented with one of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s highest awards yesterday, was also among those who met The Princess Royal. Mrs Chapman escorted The Princess in the cattle section, meeting representatives from the three National Championships, British Simmental, British Charolais and Beef Shorthorn.
