perience of seeing new young stock. It’s all
about making memories here at Swithens.
We have lots of special events, we celebrate
all the main days like Mother’s Day, Father’s
Day and we work with adults with learning
difficulties providing work experience and
also take on Askham Bryan College stu-
dents.’
Sam was adamant when talking with the
council over the petting side that one thing
had to be allowed come what may.
‘I said if they wouldn’t let us allow the
public to have direct contact with the
animals, I would shut it down. We pro-
vide a fabulous learning environment and
contact is a vital part of the experience,
probably the most important of all. It’s

that that provides the memories by touch-
ing, stroking and feeling they understand
better what animals are like and it makes
people more aware and less frightened,
as well as being very therapeutic. We get
some who have never seen a cow before,
and they are in awe. Kids and adults can
often be seen just standing in wonder
and amazement. That makes our job
very real and it’s such a great thing to see
people enjoying learning and touching the
animals.’
‘We’re building up our school visits and
children’s parties around the animals are
proving increasingly popular. We’ve also
added a soft play area and an outdoor play-
ground with little quad bikes. We’re adding
to our family experience all the time and the
café has benefitted too. Visitors are now our
main business with the livery second and
then the café. The farm is now geared to the
farm attraction and dad and John (Ernie) do
such a good job that most people visiting
never see, by looking after all of the stock.’
