Treatment of bracken, rushes, thistles and nettles using this system is well known and now` arable areas can benefit from this systems targeted approach too, using chem- ical volumes that will treat far more hectares than conventional blanket spraying. Great results have been achieved in upland areas, to recover grazing from the encroachment of bracken, spreading at the rate of 3% per year, which doesn’t sound a lot, but in less than 10 years a third of availa- ble ground is affected. Applying ‘Glyphosate’ at a dilution rate of 20:1 anytime from June onwards will have a tremendous effect. Not only will the stand be dramatically reduced, increasing the area of grazing available, but the environment for ticks will be reduced with subsequent livestock health benefits. Wiping during June when the plant is not at full stand allows the operator to see any hazards such as rocks or holes in often steep or awkward areas, which is a lot safer. ‘ a great means of controlling tall weeds in grazing pastures ’ Tractor models adaptability With the introduction of the Logic tractor mounted CTM600 models, a greater oppor- tunity of weed control is available. They are hydraulically powered and have a 6 metre operating width which allows them to cover 5-8Ha (13-20 acres) per hour in suitable condi- tions, either on grassland or arable row crops and cereals. When fully suspended these models can easily take out ‘weed beet’ in sug- ar beet and many different volunteers in other row crops. More recently great results have been achieved taking out blackgrass from wheat crops before the grass seed becomes viable. Treatment takes place as soon as there is enough height difference between the grass and the wheat heads in the crop. This ability to work in grassland and arable areas has made the CTM model a cost effective tool on many larger farms and estates. Rush problems Rushes can be very tough to work amongst, with large tussocks to climb over. One of the advantages of Contact 2000 is its robust build quality, with swan-neck drawbar and strong chassis with top quality wheels and tyres to sustain hard work. The bristles on the application brush are ideal to penetrate the rush crowns, depos- iting chemical and providing an effective application in one pass. Treating rushes this way is possible right up to the first frost of the autumn and is quite safe to use with livestock grazing at the same time.
