not only are they 120kg lighter being pow-
ered with lithium batteries rather than old
lead acid. All buggies now come with smart
controls that help with driving, maintenance,
tracking and speed limiters when required.
Intercom and clubhouse contact are also an
optional extra.
I always enjoy chatting with Martyn,
you will always get an upbeat and positive
message from him which feeds right into
the Rickerby staff. I spoke to a number of
farmers who were very complimentary
about the Rickerby team and the lengths
they will go to make sure both the deal and
service is right. Martyn and Colin run a tight
ship across the board ensuring that training
is undertaken by everyone, and everybody

from parts to service to sales through to
workshop are at the top of their game and
are customer focussed. However, it’s fine
having a proficient team but no good if
they don’t enjoy themselves, so to that end
both Martyn and Colin always encourage
feedback and fresh ideas from the staff and
endeavour to have a laugh along the way.
Just before I asked Martyn about the
future I had to ask about his other passion
and hobby - tractor restoration (yes he
does have the time believe it or not). He
quickly whipped out his phone and showed
me the photo of his fully restored David
Brown 990 – how machinery has changed
over the years.
So, the all-important question, “The
Future”. “Well”, said Martyn “Next year is
going to be an even bigger one as Rickerby
will be celebrating 140 Years in business,
and I’m already planning it now.” Wow I bet
that will be an event and a half. Anything
else I asked. As you might guess, there’s
more. As you may remember, Hexham
depot was refurbed in October 17 after
the floods and increased in size. Durham
doubled its footprint in January 2018 after
the refurb and to coincide with the 140th
anniversary, Rickerby are in the process
of acquiring a new site in south Lancs, so
depot No 9 can open late next year.
Success just rolls on and we wish them all
the best and look forward to covering next
year’s extravaganza and the new depot.
