Castle and some privately as and when
we have the right shed space, probably
buying between 170-180 per year.’
Ben who had a stint combining in Amer-
ica for eight months spending nearly 1000
hours on a John Deere from Oklahoma to
Montana is now looking forward to build-
ing his suckler herd.
‘ I’ve built the flock by
buying from the best
flocks in the country ’
‘At present I have 10 continental cows
and calves and two pedigree Limousin
cows. I’m looking at developing the pure
side. It’s an interest that should in the long
run see us saving on buying in cattle.’
James is the showman of the three. He
won the YFC Northern Area Stockjudging
championship in consecutive years and
shows the Ayrshires as well as his pedi-
gree Charollais sheep.
‘I’ve built the flock by buying from the
best flocks in the country. My four foun-
dation ewes came from Charles Marwood
of Foulrice, Whenby and I now have 20
breeding ewes. I’m aiming to breed and
sell quality shearling tups and now having
started getting closer with the numbers
I’m able to select from the best. I sold half
a dozen tups last year and won champion
Charollais with a ewe at Tockwith Show.
At Masham Sheep Fair I stood what I felt
was a highly creditable middle of the line
of 20 with my first shearling. I was happy
with that against the breed’s elite with
my Lodgehill Charollais – that’s my sheep
prefix.’
Both Ben and James are members of
Tadcaster & Wetherby YFC and Ben is the
current vice chairman.
‘One extra special mention must go
to my mum Shirley,’ says Richard. ‘She
keeps us all in order and acts as peace-
maker between the three of us as we all
have our own ideas. She came here with
my dad Barry from Hatfield near Doncas-
ter in 1979 and we originally come from
Holmfirth.’
Watch out for the Danforths’ Ayrshires
and Charollais at this year’s shows!
