‘Our cropping is generally with the cows
in mind. We grow feed wheat, feed barley,
maize and fodder beet. We’re growing
wheat varieties Shabras and Revelation this
year across just under 150 acres. Wheat
usually comes in anywhere between 3.5 to
4 tonnes per acre for us on land that is ei-
ther clay loam or sandy loam. Our feed bar-
ley is 50 acres of Orwell winter barley this
year with 48 acres of Planet spring barley.
Maize runs to 25 acres and fodder beet will
11:21:47
be between 15-20 acres. We use contractors
for combining, baling and hedge cutting.
The cows are turned out usually from May
to October.’
The beef operation is a combination of
dairy cattle put to the Limousin bull, store
cattle bought to finish on and Ben’s relative-
ly new suckler herd. Bull beef through the
dairy is fattened to 16 months with stores
bought at Barnard Castle livestock market at
16 months taken through to 18-24 months.
