Over the past several years, a lot of government focus has been on
diversifying the economy away from crude oil, with the agricultural
sector identified and prioritized as key to achieving this objective.
While significant progress has been made, Nigeria’s challenges with
agricultural production and food security have largely persisted.
If Nigeria is to truly achieve an agriculture-driven economy, the
solution is to be found in the agricultural value chain – what we call
agribusiness. The creation of dynamic, competitive industries based on
agriculture will be central to meeting not only the country’s food
security challenges, but also its critical employment challenges.
In this section, we take a look at what agribusiness is, the potentials,
opportunities and challenges of agribusiness in Nigeria, and the way
forward.
