Learn to identify and observe them in the deep night sky above McCloud Nature Park! The Indiana Astronomical Society will present a brief informational session, rain or shine, describing the celestial objects to be observed, followed by outdoor stargazing under clear skies only. Learn to use the powerful telescopes that we provide, or bring your own. Enjoy games and hands-on activities to keep your family engaged while outdoors. This is a great program for families and for scouts and scout leaders. Wear comfortable shoes and bring your water bottle. Cool off and enjoy a splashing good time! Play in the White Lick Creek with Hendricks County Park Naturalists! You might even learn something! Did you know that the presence of certain aquatic insects can tell you about the health of the creek? Wear closed-toe water shoes or old sneakers, bring towels, and don’t forget your water bottle! (If the creek or weather conditions are unsafe, there will be alternative activities.) Meet near the swinging bridge. Bring a fishing pole, bait, and a bucket, and join Park Naturalists at the Sodalis Nature Park pond for our annual FREE Fishing Derby. Earn a fish plaque for your wall and 2018 bragging rights in one of three family categories: most fish, largest fish, or smallest fish caught. No fishing license is required on this Indiana Department of Natural Resources Free Fishing Day. Don’t worry, the Park Naturalists will teach you while hiking and listening to the symphony of calls from our native frogs. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, and bring a water bottle. Welcome the McCloud honeybees back to their summer lodgings! Learn about these non-aggressive and beneficial insects while celebrating their one-year anniversary of pollinating the McCloud prairie wildflowers! Can you count all of the honeybees working behind the observation hive windows? It’s a piece of cake! Hiking Terrain Info: Flat Terrain, Natural Surfaces, Up to 2 Miles • Recommended Ages: 6+ Advance Registration Required by May 24 Fee: $3/person • Approximate program duration: 2 hours Allergy alert: As with any visit to the outdoors, it is possible to come in contact with live honeybees and/or other stinging insects. People with severe honeybee allergies may want to reconsider visiting the observational beehive.
