SCOUTING WITH HENDRICKS COUNTY PARKS and RECREATION Spend some time scouting with Hendricks County Parks and Recreation this summer at McCloud Nature Park! NEW! We have added scout programs at McCloud Nature Park this summer! The summer months are the perfect time of year for some camping and star-gazing, so our park naturalists have developed some scout programming that will help boys and girls from all scouting organizations learn new skills, work toward badges, and most importantly – have fun! All scout programs are open to boys and girls, scouts and non- scouts who wish to register. Be sure to dress for the weather, as all of the programs include outdoor activities. All registered attendees will earn a special Hendricks County Parks Nature Challenge badge for each scout program they attend. Advance registration is required at for all scout programs and overnighters. CAMPING SKILLS ASTRONOMY MERIT BADGE WORKSHOP Check-in between 12:30 and 12:45 p.m. Check-in between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. Are your scouts camp-ready? This program prepares scouts to pack the proper gear and select appropriate campsites for their overnight adventures, rain or shine. Scouts will also practice vital camping skills like rolling a sleeping bag, pitching a tent, and building a fire. Be sure to dress for the weather as this program is outdoors! Take an adventure through the universe while keeping both feet on the Earth! Join our Park Naturalist, who is a certified BSA merit badge counselor, for some star gazing basics, and after a short break, attend the inside program by the Indiana Astronomical Society. Then if the sky is clear after sunset, look through several telescopes and speak with astronomers. (If the sky is not clear after sunset, you may attend one of the other monthly astronomy programs.) SUNDAY, MAY 20, 1-4 P.M. SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 6-9 P.M. This program helps fulfill requirements for: Outdoor Adventure (Brownies), Cabin Camper (Brownies), Camper (Juniors), Call of the Wild (Wolves), Bear Necessities (Bears), Camper (Webelos), Cast Iron Chef (Webelos), Walkabout (Webelos), Castaway (Webelos) Fee: $10/attendee. Advance registration required by May 18. Approximate program duration: 3 hours. This is not an overnight camping program. See below for information about camping overnight at McCloud Nature Park. Recommended age level: Grades 2-5. Merit badge requirements covered at workshop: #2, 3, 4a-4b, 4d, 5d, 6a, 6c-6d, 8. Fee: $10/attendee. Advance registration required by August 16. Approximate program duration: 3 hours. Recommended age level: Grades 6-12. SCOUT OVERNIGHTERS I n addition to the summer scout programs, we also offer a unique opportunity for scouts to camp overnight at McCloud Nature Park! We offer five campsites, each with its own firepit, plus breakfast and s’mores for everyone! Scouts should bring their own tents, camping gear, sleeping bags and something to cook over the campfire. Scouts are encouraged to participate in activities led by our park naturalists, and adult leaders may also lead their scouts in activities around the park at their leisure. Advance registration is required through Registration opens July 31. Fee: $20 per scout; $7 per chaperone. Scouts of all levels are welcome; however, tag- alongs or other non-scouts are not permitted. Chaperones must be either scout leaders or the legal guardians of attending scouts. Scouts may check-in between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
