THE EUROPEAN SCHOOLS NEWSPAPER
ISSUE N. 3
Our pupils want to tell you about their favourite places in our lovely city:
MONUMENTS AND LEGENDS
MAIN SQUARE
The Main Square is located in the
centre of Salamanca, lined by
restaurants, different shops and
cafés such as Novelty Café where
Unamuno used to have his social
gatherings and talk about its
amazing harmony.
It is World Heritage since 1988.
It is made in a special kind of
stone only found in Salamanca.
Currently it is the centre of
Salamanca’s social life.
‘CASA DE LAS CONCHAS’
It is a historical building that
currently houses a public library.
It is decorated with more than 300
shells, symbol of the order of
Santiago, as well as of the pilgrims
performing the Way of St James.
The inner court is characterized by
arches and columns.
The legend says that under one of
these shells there is a treasure left
there by the building’s owners.
THE FROG ON THE UNIVERSITY
FAÇADE
There is a frog on a skull carved on
the university façade.
The legend says that students in
Salamanca have to see the frog if
they want to pass their exams,
otherwise they will fail and will
not be able to graduate.
