The English Channel: A Tribute to Susan Hawkins and Linda McCloskey | Page 38

Linda had more students win the annual writing prizes from the Rhetoric Department. than anyone in the English Department.

Even as her health failed,

she gave herself generously and tirelessly to her students.

I remember in particular a glorious afternoon with her at her house,

where she regaled me

with shrimp for lunch,

toured her beautiful garden,

and talked new books together, exchanging reading recommendations. Linda had a quiet, calm demeanor,

but felt deeply.

She inspired others with her

intense passion for literature,

especially memoir.
