National Alumnae Getaway

By Angelic Garay,

Alpha Zeta Alumnae, VP of Alumnae Affairs

It is with great pleasure that the National Alumnae Association hosted the first ever NAA Getaway in

Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada on January 27-29, 2017. The weekend event brought members from across the country to do what we love most: service and sisterhood.

The kick-off event started by having a romantic dinner at an Italian eatery at Town Square, Las Vegas’ upscale, open air shopping and entertainment development. It was followed by going to the Fremont Street Experience, a 5-block entertainment district in historic downtown Las Vegas, and enjoying the world’s largest video screen, Viva Vision. The next morning, we traveled by bus to 3-Square Food Bank, where we spent all morning packaging meal supplies for underrepresented populations including children and the elderly. This event truly showed our colors as members of KDChi. Once we worked an appetite, we enjoy the well-known fast food of Vegas – a buffet at the Main Street, Downtown! For the afternoon, we headed to view the Red Rock formations outside the city, and get a breath of fresh air. To wrap up day, we watched the sunset from the world’s largest Ferris wheel, the High Roller at the Linq.

Overall, we spent time not only getting to meet new sisters, but see the beauty of a different community. We cannot thank enough for everyone who was able to join us that weekend; your involvement is what created such an incredible experience! Also, huge shout out to the Southern Nevada Alumnae Chapter for all their help in navigating the city, as well as the NAA Getaway Committee who pulled it all together!

Just leaves me wondering… where we will go next! #GoNAA

Earning rewards is key to student app to prevent distracted driving

March 8, 2018

SMU News

DALLAS (SMU) - Neha Husein gripped her steering wheel as her car jolted forward, hit from behind on one of Dallas' busiest and most dangerous freeways. Shaken, but not injured, the high school senior surveyed the significant damage to her car. The cause of the crash? The driver behind her was texting while driving.

The 2014 collision was the SMU junior's inspiration to develop a solution to stop drivers from texting while driving, a practice that killed 455 Texans and played a role in 109,660 crashes in Texas in 2016. Her smart-phone app, "Just Drive," awards points to drivers who lock their phones while driving. Those points can then be redeemed for coupons or free food, drinks or merchandise.

Husein is one of six college entrepreneurs selected to participate March 10 in the Red Bull Launch Institute at Austin's South by Southwest Interactive Festival. She will meet with industry leaders and other entrepreneurs to further develop and amplify her project. The institute is scheduled from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at Palazzo Lavaca, 1614 Lavaca St., Austin.

She’s not being judgmental. Everyone has texted while driving, Husein says. "We are used to multitasking, and sitting in traffic gets boring."

But the marketing and human rights major believes positive reinforcement can change behavior. Rewards are motivating to millennials like Husein. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, drivers age 16 to 34 are most likely to text while driving, but Husein is betting the app will appeal to all ages.
