KDChi Chapter:

Delta Alpha, Graduate Chapter

New Member Class:

Zeta, Spring 2014

About Gabriela:

She teaches high school Spanish at Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, OK. The student population is 100% Native American and the teaching staff is composed of mostly Native Americans. Gabriela is one of a handful of staff that are not Native American. She enjoys sharing and exchanging culture, heritage and language with her students every day.

She is also very involved in several women's Masonic organizations.

Somebody from one of these

organizations once asked her if she had ever considered joining a sorority and that was what planted the seed! After reaching out to several Latina sororities, she heard back from KDChi's Rachel Glick. Her response was warm and welcoming.

"Rachel answered all my questions (and I had a million) and she was so friendly!" Gabriela says.

She researched KDChi and read through the newsletters, the website, the Facebook pages and she says she knew she had to be part of such a dynamic and wonderful group of women.

She remembers her journey to become a new member...

"My Graduate New Member Educator was awesome!" Gabriela says. "She helped me out tremendously with everything and has kept up with me, even after the process."

Gabriela's husband recently retired from the US Army. Together, they enjoy traveling and exploring new and out-of-the-way places during their down time. This summer, they're traveling to Costa Rica! They also enjoy riding motorcycles, cooking, gardening, and just spending time together.

“Hard days are the best because that’s when champions are made. If you push through the hard days, then you can get through anything.”

- Gabby Douglas,

Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics

Every four years at the Olympics, we get the pleasure of seeing people from around the world showcase their talents, achieve their dreams and create a legacy. Luckly as part of KDChi, we don’t have to wait every four years. In fact, we had the opportunity to

really think about it this past summer at conference.

Things have changed from my first conference. Back then we used digital or disposable cameras to take photos (so no instant posting!), you needed a .edu email for Facebook, MySpace was still a thing and conference had less than 200 sisters attending. This year we had over double that amount & now #KDChiCon16 means something to all of us. On Sunday afternoon leaving conference it was filled with several friend requests on SnapChat, selfies and promises to connect. The one thing that never changes is the excitement of meeting new sisters at conference. I enjoy observing how our KDChi family interacts and those little moments that a selfie may not capture.

So many were present, from Alpha to Beta Rho Chapter (that’s right, Beta Rho!) and colonies representing their respective schools and communities in historical Austin, TX. I hope you all had a chance to get to know sisters you’ve never met, grow your connection to the ones you already know, and evolve as a chapter with the knowledge you gained at conference. I also hope you had the opportunity to share what you do at your chapter to gain new sisters, things that make chapter life run smoothly and also how you are making an impact on your communities.

Conference is an opportunity to change us, to inspire and to become a better, stronger version of who we already are. By seeing and meeting sisters with different perspectives and different experiences we all learn a little more about ourselves. I hope you take those experiences into this fall semester (or quarter!) and use them to your advantage.

And if there is ever anything you need (conference or otherwise) never hesitate to ask. From your chapter president, to regional director, to national leadership we are here to help you. Good luck with the new semester/quarter sisters!
