Thursday night did not disappoint, featuring oriental-inspired creations from Betsuni - Calgary and ethereal whimsy from impressive Blue Ladybug Design - Ontario. Rounding out the evening with strong collections by three local designers: Kevin Lemire - Gate 8ighty 8ight, Alisha Schick - Suka Clothing, and Derek Jagodzinsky - LUXX Ready to Wear.

I am admittedly biased to the last two designers, they are both good friends and respected peers in the local fashion scene. I have helped Derek in the past with sample development and seasonal work, and I teach at MC College with Alisha - so I was especially interested to see their most recent collections. Suka made a strong showing, with Schick`s trademark edginess and detailing shining through. LUXX presented `Rainbow Warriors` a collection inspired by an ancient Indigenous prophecy that people of various walks of life will unite to spread the wisdom of living in harmony with the planet and each other. Pride in his Cree heritage stands out through the use of colours, fringe, materials and Cree Syllabics (translated, his signature print displays the mantra `we will succeed`). This is his best collection yet in my opinion.

Highlights of Friday night`s show included another peek at the beautiful work of Blue Ladybug Design, as well as local veteran of the fashion scene Stanley Carroll. The event wrapped up Saturday evening in fine form, with fabulous collections shown by four International designers followed by an after party at El Cortez.

All in all, a very inspiring week! Did you know that here in Edmonton, we host the second-largest Fashion Week in Canada. What sets WCFW apart is their mission to create a community of all involved in the fashion and beauty industries, including media and production staff. When asked what stands out after participating in another successful event, Alisha Schick says it best … ``WCFW is a great way to build brand awareness and support the design community that is alive and well in Edmonton. It`s important for the public to know independant fashion in Edmonton exists - and that community is thriving with young designers!!!``
