WD: I believe that 100% and you’ve proven to have done extremely well for yourself just through your success. Do you follow any specific meal regimen to go along with your training?

JM: I try just do things in moderation in the off season and then when I get closer to competition, then I clean it up for the last month or so.

WD: Out of all the sports, why did boxing appeal to you the most?

JM: I love that my hard work is directly reflected in boxing. What I put into it is what I get out of it. The other part that appealed to me was the all-around challenge of the sport, mentally, physically and emotionally.

WD: Are there any other sports you participate in aside from boxing?

JM: I love playing all sports! In the summers I try to get out and play slow-pitch with my friends. I have played basketball, volleyball and soccer. Being active is my way of life.

WD: In the world of boxing, is there someone you idolize?

JM: I have a lot of different role models and fighters that I look up to and try to emulate. A lot of which I have had the privilege to have met and now call my friends.

WD: What has been the most memorable part of your life as a competitor thus far?

JM: it is hard to pick just one! But if I had to, looking back, I would have to say winning my first world title in 2005.

WD: We have to cut our interview short but I have to say it has been an inspiring and amazing time to have you on The Edmonton Muse. Before we go, if you had a message you would like to send out into the world, what would it be?

JM: If you believe in yourself and your goals, you can achieve them! All it takes is a little hard work and a lot of sweat equity.

Thank you so much again to Jelena for being a part of the Edmonton Muse. In March 2017, a documentary was also released on her titled ‘Jelena’. Go have a look at the career path of this inspiring athlete that arose from our very own city Edmonton, Alberta.
