Annihilator with Mason and Mutank

June 17th at the Starlite

Concert Works brought Edmonton the Thrash Metal bands, Annihilator, Mutank and Mason to the Starlite Room on June 17th.

It was one heavy, sweaty show full of headbanging, moshing, and some awesome heavy metal! The Muse got a chance to talk to Chris and Costa from Mutank and JImmy from Mason before the headliner graced the stage.

Q. What is your Muse, what inspires you to write and play your music?

A. I'm Jimmy I play in the band Mason from Northern Australia. It's great to be in Canada.Literally anything that comes out. I just sort of write on the spot. I will just duck out to my car to write a riff. Main bands that we listen to are Tutonic Fall, Creator of Sodom, and Annihilator, they are thrash legends, can't get by those guys. It's a mix. Love it all. Anything heavy.

A. I am Chris from Mutank, it's fantastic to be out here in Edmonton. We are from Montreal, but it's always great to hit the West Coast, I love it out here. I would say my muses probably just the fact that we get to meet so many cool people and to basically see the world playing music. We get to meet these guys, hang out with a bunch of great people, play with some great bands, hear some great

bands, tour with Annihilator, it's fantastic. Beyond that for artists wise, I would say a lot of Kiss was definitely my big muse, definitely the earlier cross-over scene, DRI - stuff like that and a lot of other jazz guitar players that I'm not really going to get into, otherwise I'm going to talk for hours.

A. I'm Costa from Mutank. We are here in Edmonton, it's pretty awesome. The crowd was the best here so far. They called it "Deadmonton" in Calgary, it's more like "Shredmonton". It's pretty crazy here. I started playing guitar when I was 14 and I was inspired by John Petrucci, James Hetfield to name a few.

Q. What did you listen to in high school?

A. (Jimmy) Around that age gap, I was probably listening to a lot of Kiss absolutely, a lot of Van Halen. I grew up around a lot of classic rock so that is my guitar playing influence. A lot of Dimebag Darryl, a lot of different music. That is the best time you could get into things. When you are in high school all your friends dish shit out, check this band out, check that band out. Its the best time for a young mind to absorb all that kind of stuff. It pretty much paved my way. Lots of Slayer for an angry teenager.
