Juliet Ruin - Ugly Side

A Rebecca Rotten Review

Juliet Ruin is a local Edmonton Metal/Rock band that instantly reminded me of “Unleash the Archers” when I listened to their brand new video “The Ugly Side”.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching the video which tells a story on your screen; my favorite kind of music video.

So settle in and get comfortable; let’s learn all about Juliet Ruin together.

RR: What inspires you to sit down and write songs?  What is your Muse?

JR:  Our inspirations comes from a variety of sources, mainly being whatever happens to be going on in life and what lessons any of us happen to be learning or anything that may be weighing on a band member, friend or the world. I feel like there is always something to write about, especially when we can bounce ideas off one another.

RR: Tell me a bit about the band, who is "Juliet Ruin"

JR: Juliet Ruin is a fun and melodic Metal/Rock band that is often likened to a gritty, female fronted Alexisonfire. We like to play songs about things we are passionate about and we like to have fun on stage. We are all good friends and we love going out to see local shows together and do semi-dumb things together. It is kind of lame but we are one of those bestie bands. It's adorable.  People often think I am Juliet Ruin, which is cool, it is up for interpretation, but I do find a sort of solace in the name as an escape from the anxiety of my slight stage fright.

RR : How did you all meet?

JR: We all met in one way or another within the Edmonton music scene.

RR: What are your musical influences?

JR: As a group we have some pretty varying musical influences and it definitely shows in our writing a lot. Some examples are: Alexisonfire, Slipknot, Chuck Berry, Clutch, Unleash The Archers, Rage Against the Machine...  the list goes on infinitely hahaha.  As far as vocal influences, I have so many but I have worshiped the talent of Freddy Mercury since I was very young, so I feel like he is probably my one of, if not my biggest vocal influence.

RR: Name another local band that you like to listen to and why you like their music.

JR: I am so fortunate as to have so amazingly talented friends, coming out with non-stop awesome music. It is hard to choose just one, as cheesy as it may sound, it is true. Some of my favorite bands are my friends. To name one though, I will go with Black Friday. They are the heaviest 3 piece I have ever heard.. I love their music, stage presence and attitudes as people. Just all around great. Their first EP really kicked ass, I listen to it weekly and I am excitedly awaiting the next one
