or handmade presents such as tea cosies, jumpers, socks and dolls.

Not even the bombing could stop people from having a good old knees up and people took their parties down to the shelters or the tube stations. The Salvation Army sent out parties of carol singers to tour the stations and give out sweets. Magazines published recipes for 'shelter snacks' including coconut cookies and two layer sandwiches.

So when you are tucking into your Christmas Day feast, remember how lucky you are to be able to eat those pigs in blankets, I can barely imagine a world without them. Christmas has always been a big part of our lives and nothing can stop us all being merry and indulging in a bit of Christmas spirit, playing charades and eating far too many mince pies!
