Security is by far the largest thing in need of change . The IT shop must be more proactive around security .
Systems are hacked , typically because the IT shop is not leveraging state-of-the-art security software and processes . Thus they are unable to address the current threat vectors .
Cloud security is actually better than on premises security because it has the ability to centrally and dynamically update security software . This dynamic software is state-of-the-art , and is always considering and reacting to threats . Moreover , cloud providers have people and processes that keep an eye on the threats , and react accordingly . If , for example , requests to log in are coming from the same IP address , that IP can be automatically blocked .
From Planning to Implementation
Finally , building on the initial migration work done last year , the Global 2000 will hit the cloud computing accelerator this year . We can claim that 5-7 percent of total workloads now exist in IaaS clouds , such as AWS . By the end of 2017 , it is likely to move to 17-20 percent .
Why is this ? Well , in 2015 and 2016 , we built the cloud migration factories , did the planning , and got the budget to do the migration . This year , most of the Global 2000 companies will just execute that plan .
Why are things moving so fast ? It is because most of the workloads picked first to move are the easy ones ; LAMP-based applications , for example . Eventually , enterprises will run out of the “ low-hanging-fruit ” and migration will likely slow down a bit . Indeed , they may run out of movable workloads by 2022 , and those remaining workloads will be retired or placed with an MSP or co-lo provider .
The Best Path
Putting the predictions aside for now , the outlook for 2017 really comes down to what these particular issues , past and present , mean for your enterprise . If you are a bit ahead of the crowd , good for you . Continue down that path . If you are a bit behind , it is best to spend 2017 catching up .
You cannot change the events of the past . However , you can learn from them . Ultimately , that is the best path .
