WHAT TO EXPECT
WHEN GOING INTO DISPENSARIES
My first-time encounter with ANY dispensary was
Healthy Buds located at 7727 E 21 st St. in Tulsa. I
must admit when I went inside, I was not impressed.
A couple of people sat behind a counter with jars
of medical cannabis setting on the counter in front
of them. They requested to see my “card” and my
drivers license. Which I quickly handed to them in
my excitement to purchase cannabis legally. I then
asked about the medicine setting upon the counter. I
explained to them what my medical symptoms were
and they sold me a strain called White Widow. I felt
a Déjà vu. I have purchased weed from places that
looked like this in the seventies. My take from this
experience is: “You can’t judge a book by its cover.
That White Widow strain will sure take care of what
ails you.”
Editor’s Note: Watch for upcoming story about
Healthy Buds Dispensary, the first dispensary in
Tulsa, and all of the changes being made to their
store.
My next dispensary was near downtown Tulsa at The
Peak Dispensary located at 202 S Lansing. It ap-
peared new and was hospital clean. Upon entering
I was greeted by a smiling receptionist and asked to
sign-in and provide my mmj card and another form of
ID. She scanned them and asked me to have a seat
explaining “someone will be with you in a moment.’
The door stood ajar into the other room and I could
see people milling around and looking at the different
medicines.
Soon I was accompanied into the next room by a
“budtender.” A budtender is a title of a staff member
who works within a dispensary or store where medi-
cal or recreational cannabis is sold. Their job is to
offer suggestions to customers, answer questions,
handle products and showcase products being sold.

The Peak Dispensary was well-stocked with various
types of medicinal cannabis products. There were
several different forms of bud or flower. Plus they had
edibles like gummy bears, chocolates, and cookies.
This was also my first experience with vape pens
filled with cannabis. We have owned vape stores for
more than six years, so this hit close to home.
I had to buy the vape pen. And I purchased an eighth
(⅛) ounce of eight (8) different strains of medical
cannabis. You see when the doctor makes a recom-
mendation for medical cannabis to treat your ailments
he cannot prescribe a particular strain or amount to
use. You must ascertain that for yourself.
The next dispensary was OHG Dispensary located
at 21 st and Mingo in Tulsa. Upon entering the facility
I stepped into a small area approximately 6 ft x 6 ft
and presented my MMJ card and drivers license thru
a security window before a buzzer announced my
admission into the next room where an array of me-
dicinal cannabis products were displayed. They had
some nice glassware (water pipes, etc) displayed as
well. I purchased a Simple Cure vape cartridge from
OHG before leaving.
Each dispensary has their own method of packaging.
In other words, there appears to be no consistency
in packaging requirements by the State of Okla-
homa. Some warnings appear consistently across all
packaging i.e. use during pregnancy. Others do not
even list list the strain and whether it is a sativa, an

indica or a hybrid. Personally, I would like to know this
information about each strain of medicine I purchase.

Overall, this is what you can expect when entering a
medical marijuana dispensary:
1. You will probably be asked to wait in a
restricted waiting area until it is your turn to
enter into the area where product is displayed.
2. Expect good service. One budtender per
customer is the norm for good service.
3. Budtenders should be knowledgeable enough
to explain the effects of each strain offered. A
good budtender will not only know the pros of
each strain, but will also be able to explain
the cons of each strain as well. For example,
does it tend to cause severely dry mouth, or in
some cases paranoia.
