Shred the love : Guitarist Paul Benjaman takes his groove global

By Chris B . Critter
TULSA , Okla . - Paul Benjaman is a local musician whose name you should already know . He represents the modern development of the Tulsa sound and red dirt scenes . When The Current Buzz caught up with Benjaman , he had just returned from a tour of Spain with his Okie music friend Levi Parham .
Before telling about his overseas foray he also talked about other big music events he recently attended in the U . S . Benjaman described Folk Alliance in Kansas City as being about bonding and building relationships with other music professionals .
“( It ’ s ) a good place to make personal connections with people who might do business with you in the future , publicists and what have you . It ’ s really a good help with everything musical if you ’ re really serious about making your living do it .”
Something ( 2010 ), and Sneaker ( 2015 ). But he also has a new 4-song EP on the cusp of release . He says there ’ s not a precise release date , but it will be soon . The songs are left over from the Sneaker sessions , but they held together so well on their own with a distinct feel and vibe that he decided they warranted a separate release on their own . To be called Twilight of Territory , Benjaman says these four tunes reflect the influence of a local legend he has learned a lot from , that being Randy Crouch .
“ When I was writing it I was definitely thinking about Randy ’ s influence on me , especially some of his deeper cuts . I ’ m not sure Randy will ever get the recognition that he ’ s due just as composer in his own right .”
Like most upper echelon music talents , the best way to experience Paul Benjaman ’ s music is live and in person at your favorite local venue . Tulsans are blessed to have that opportunity at least twice a week . Benjaman has weekly residencies at both the Mercury Lounge ( Thursdays ) and The Colony ( Sundays ). Outside of Tulsa , Benjaman is always adding shows around the region and has events coming up in June and July in Arkansas , Kansas City and Tahlequah .
