Here at The Buzz, we think all those reasons are fine, but we want to remind you that Memorial Day is a day to commemorate the brave men and women who gave everything in service to our country. “Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America….Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead.” (www. usmemorialday.org) So please take a moment to consider the emotional toll this weekend has on families of the many people who gave their all to keep our freedoms free. They don’t celebrate military holidays with burgers and barbeque, these weekends are filled with sorrow. Those who made it home sometimes face years fraught with difficulty readjusting to society, PTSD and depression, only to find that our government has poorly planned for these eventualities. Biggest shocker: 22 soldiers commit There is a stigma attached to returning veterans; they are thought to have assimilation issues, don’t work well with others, are untrusting of anyone not a soldier and the fear that a veteran might have a mental breakdown are just a few concerns some companies have, so vets lose housing, benefits and security. It’s as if their service was all for nothing. Now, the good news. There are people helping these soldiers get their lives back. These angels of hope spend endless hours seeking out and aiding their brothers and sisters who desperately need a hand. What really got our attention was finding out how deep their passion goes. Sandra Oxford and The American Veterans Motorcycle Club give of themselves daily. They are hosting a once-a-year charity event June 24 at the Riverwalk in Jenks. We’ll have the details in our June issue of the Current Buzz. While you enjoy Memorial Day, consider the importance of what our military personnel gave to this country and what some came home to. Even if you are expecting our new president to fix all, it hasn’t happened yet. No matter your political opinion, our vets need help today. If you are a soldier dealing with readjustment issues, homelessness, suicidal thoughts or actions, please reach out for help. You are not alone and you are not forgotten. Make a call, ask for assistance. You have brothers and sisters who want to get you to a better place. Suicide is one instance where procrastination is a great thing. Give the Tulsa Vet Center a chance; make that call and put off your dark ideas for a bit. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. And thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you gave to our country. Now, let us repay you. If you know a veteran who is suffering, don’t wait for them to ask, get them help today. Stepping in could save a life. It’s the very least we can do. We will have personal stories on our blog on www. thecurrentbuzz.net about what a Navy retiree is doing for her fellow man. Get some tissues and read about what Sandra Oxford does for returning vets in the Tulsa area. A donation seems so small in comparison to what Sandy and her staff at the Tulsa Vet Center do to pull soldiers back from the brink. www.thecurrentbuzz.net | 33
