as Railroad Earth, Yonder
Mountain String Band and
Marty Stuart.

having to regroup and put
some things – and people-
behind us. That’s what I was
writing about lyrically in the
new songs, and it became
kind of a catharsis. Nothing
was contrived. We didn’t
have to relate to it in the
third person. We were living
these circumstances, and
that gave us the impetus
and inspiration to share our
sentiments. Ultimately, those
setbacks and difficulties led
to new opportunities and
allowed a little light to shine

Americana band Yarn
formed in Brooklyn in 2007.
The band, fronted by vocalist
and guitarist Blake Christiana,
eventually left New York for
the greener pastures and
wide-open space of North
Carolina. The band’s most
recent release, This is the
Year, emerged from that
move, full of country and
bluegrass undertones. Hop Jam, a one-day
celebration of beer and
music in Brady Arts District
May 21 includes free, all-
ages concerts on two stages.
Because the Hanson Brothers
are behind this wonderful
event, it’s guaranteed there
will be good tunes. This
year’s performers include
hometown hosts, Hanson,
Mayer Hawthorn, KONGOS,
Castro, and Oklahoma’s own
John Fullbright and Johnny
Polygon.
“We were dealing with real
life issues,” Christiana said in
