By Joe Mack
Officially observed
We all know that April showers bring May flowers , but did you know that April holds some notable observances , like National Poetry Month ? Check out page 40 for some of the prose events to placate your creative side and inspire the writer within .
April is also Autism Awareness Month , Donate Life Month , Jazz Appreciation Month , Mathematics Awareness Month , National Prevent Child Abuse Month , Parkinson ’ s Disease Awareness Month , Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Women ’ s Empowerment Month .
The day Okies stood still
April 19 , 1995 will live on in infamy in the hearts and minds of countless Oklahomans . That morning , at 9:02 a . m ., a truck bomb was detonated near the Alfred P . Murrah Federal Building ’ s main entrance , killing 168 men , women and children , and causing nearly $ 700 million in damage .
However , what was meant to tear our society apart brought us together , and Oklahomans rallied to rebuild , repair and recover with all of America filling in on support where needed . The permanent memorial and lawn that now reside where the federal building once stood are now international landmarks , and downtown Oklahoma City has blossomed in the decades since ; take that , anti-government extremists !
Several events pop up around
April 19 to help memorialize those who gave , including the Memorial Marathon and a Memorial Motorcycle Run .
