MUSKOGEE , Okla . – Just a few steps from the intersection of Broadway & Main in downtown Muskogee , the friendly staff at American Pie Wood-Fired Pizza & Spirits is hard at work making authentic , Tuscan-style wood-fired pizza dreams an American reality .
The husband and wife team of Jamie and Dustin Ashworth have grown into the space the right way ; American Pie ’ s minimal décor and limited seating create an unsung anxiousness for growth . Which is smart for their experiment , because who really knew if Muskogee would support a stout , legit pizza kitchen ? The open room allows views of the brick-oven and clever ventilation system , which pipes the subtle scents of savory meats and cheeses across the downtown corridor . Follow your nose to the beckoning call , slide into
the first available seat and try to decide between house specialties , buildyour-own creations , sandwiches and / or fresh salads .
We were targeting a tandem pizza plan when a server walked by clutching an uncommon meatball sub featuring three tennis ball-sized handmade meatballs lined up across a hoagie , towering over the rim of the sliced bread nearly two inches . Though the challenge of conquering the meatball sub crossed all our minds , all involved had pie on the brain .
In attempts to find balance during this particular luncheon , we went with a pair specialty house pies – a large Three Meat , and a smaller Margherita – to get perspective on non-meat bearing options . Our server assured us these selections would certainly satisfy with
The Three Meat featured a trio of thinly sliced Italian meats and a significant showering of mozzarella cheese resting atop a house-made sauce and crust foundation . No need to add red pepper flakes to your Three Meat as every bite offers a sweet , spicy pinch in concert with aromatics courtesy of fennel and fresh basil .
The Margharita , while smaller and simpler appearance , packed plenty of flavor ; again , with a handmade sauce and crust beginning , topped with generous pinches of fresh mozzarella and a sparse offering of fresh-chopped basil , finished with a drizzling of savory olive oil . This is cooking show-quality pizza in downtown Muskogee , and while the back of the staff shirts proclaim
“ Upscale on the Down Low ”, the secret is out .
Downtown Muskogee is undergoing a slow , steady revitalization , and having another great food option to draw the people in only makes the neighborhood taste that much better .
