Culturally rich symposium turns 45

TAHLEQUAH , Okla . – In front of Seminary Hall , on the campus of Northeastern State University in Tahlequah , stands a 9-foot statue of Sequoyah , one of the most famous figures of the Cherokee Nation . Sequoyah created the Cherokee syllabary , a world renowned Native American literacy program . He stands over the campus , quill pen and paper in hand .
The Northeastern State University center for tribal studies continues to honor the tradition of Sequoyah with their 45 th annual Symposium on the American Indian , taking place April 10- 15 in the University Center on the Northeastern campus .
The theme for this year ’ s event is “ Indian Givers : Indigenous inspirations ”; it will focus on the ways Native Americans have influenced Western culture through art , literature , and other creative outlets .
Interested parties will revel in the symposium ’ s many lectures , screenings and panel discussions that are scheduled throughout the week ; atch a screening of the award winning psychological thriller “ Violet ” written and directed by Choctaw filmmaker Mark Williams , attend a lecture by inspiring Native intellectuals like Dr . Jeff Corntassel of the University of Victoria Canada , and much more There are also opportunities to participate in Native American activities such as stickball and other native games . The symposium wraps up on Saturday , April 15 , with an intertribal Powwow and Dinner in the UC Ballroom .
