Where the Red Fern goes

TAHLEQUAH , Okla . – The clover grows green and lush , still damp from an overnight thunderstorm . The redbuds are in full bloom along with the snow white dogwoods . It ’ s April in the Oklahoma Ozarks and the quiet little college town of Tahlequah is being serenaded by folk guitars and Blue tick hounds .
If you have never been to the Red Fern Festival in downtown Tahlequah , then this is the year to go . The Festival begins Friday , April 28th in Norris Park , where they will be screening “ Where the Red Fern Grows ”, a movie based on the famous book of the same name , written by beloved author Wilson Rawls . Afterwards , grab a cold one and enjoy the live music by Rivers Edge and other tobe-announced bands in the newly constructed pavilion next door .
The fun picks up again on Saturday with local bands like DocFell & Co ., and Olen Davis & the Travelers . The Red Fern Festival delivers something for everyone . Watch the Kids bounce around the inflatables in Norris Park . Then take a stroll down beside the crystal clear waters of Town Branch , watch duck races , hound dog trials , and admire the Muscle Cars , Hot Rods , and antique cars at the 5C ’ s Car Show .
If you ’ re a history buff , check out the historical Cherokee Nation Courthouse , learn about the wilder days of Indian Territory at the Cherokee Nation Jail , then browse the craft show on the courthouse lawn and shop for antiques along Muskogee Avenue .
All that fun can work up a mighty appetite , but don ’ t worry - the Red Fern Festival will have all your festival favorites . Satisfy your primal side with a smoked turkey leg . Snack on some sweet kettle corn , or perhaps a classic funnel cake . Then you can wash it all down with a frosty growler of home brewed Root Beer .
As the sun dips low over the Cookson Hills , the classic neon signs will buzz to life on the North End District creating the perfect atmosphere to sit out on one of the patios of the many downtown restaurants , coffee shops and bars . Or better yet , you can set out a lawn chair in Norris Park and relax to the sound of live music . Just maybe if you listen real hard you ’ ll hear the sound of an old red bone hound bawling at a coon that has given him the slip .
