Chris Robinson Brotherhood ready to stretch out on the open ground

TULSA , Okla . – On April 6 , the Chris Robinson Brotherhood returns to Tulsa ’ s Cain ’ s Ballroom , taking fans on a musical journey of the best kind . CRB , formed in 2011 by former Black Crowes vocalist Chris Robinson , beautifully blends psychedelic roots music with everything from country to jazz .
Well known for its live shows , CRB will release the third volume of its “ Betty ’ s Blends ” live albums May 5 . Volume 3 : Self-Rising , Southern Blends features 13 tracks captured during CRB ’ s November 2015 Southeastern tour . These latest CRB recordings were mixed live from the soundboard by Betty Cantor- Jackson , a legendary Grateful Dead archivist who began recording the Dead while still a teenager and eventually helped engineer and produce a number of that band ’ s albums .
CRB guitarist Neal Casal enjoyed the opportunity to work with Cantor-Jackson , who broke barriers early on as a woman in the field of audio engineering .
“ Not only did she make all those legendary Grateful Dead live recordings , she also engineered so many great studio records – Dead records , Jerry Garcia Band records , Hot Tuna ,” Casal noted . “ We consider ourselves lucky to be around her , lucky to learn from her .”
Casal , who has toured with a number of bands throughout his career , enjoys hanging out with his CRB bandmates both on and off the stage .
“ There are a lot of laughs with this band ,” Casal explained . “ It starts with Chris . He ’ s a very funny guy . He likes to have a good time . He ’ s a good natured dude .”
Everyone in the band is a huge music fan , and the tour bus is stocked with a turntable and records . Music is a frequent topic of discussion on the road , and the musicians like nothing better than to go vinyl hunting during stops .
“ We all get along very well , and we realize what a fortunate position we ’ re in to be able to play music for a living . It ’ s actually our job ,” Casal laughed . “ It ’ s a beautiful thing , and there ’ s no reason to be anything other than thankful . People see that when we play live . You can try to fake that stuff , but people see through it . We have a very nice time as a band together .”
As a musician , Casal loves the opportunities he has with CRB .
“ It ’ s everything I could ever hope for musically . Everyone
is free to be his own musical self in this band ,” he explained . “ Chris , being the mighty explorer that he is , built a band founded on massive expanses of open ground for everyone . His dream for it was that its chemistry was right and the collective vision was right . Everyone can express himself individually and widely , but still have it integrate in a balanced way into the overall ecosystem of the band .”
