CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW CHAMPIONSHIPS Historic Farmington Hosts Its First Palmer Cup By Bob Carney I f the state’s top amateurs, used to playing the Russell C. Palmer Cup at the Country Club of Water- bury, tend to underestimate the challenges of this year’s venue, it’s understandable. On paper, the Country Club of Farmington looks as genteel as its century-old clubhouse. “Oh, yeah, 100 per cent they’ll underestimate it,” said Assistant Pro Mike Price, who has worked at the club at various positions for almost 8 years. “On the card, it’s not crazy long. Even after the first hole, which is pretty easy, you may be feeling that way. But then comes No. 2, an uphill par 3 that’s probably the tough- est hole on the course. Then the game is on.” Waterbury, which has hosted nine Palmer Cups, is the site of the Connecticut Amateur this year, hence the move to Farmington, a 1924 Devereux Emmet design hosting the competition for the first time. 20 | CSGA Links // May 2018 www.csgalinks.org
