THE INSIDE SCOOP THE INSIDE SCOOP Stay Connected with the CSGA GCSAA and CSGA Grants Support CT Superintendents Gib Palmer Receives Prestigious USGA Joe Dey Award L ast year was a very good year for the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Super- intendents (CAGCS). Recognized as one of the best associations in the country, they were selected as one of just four regional bodies to receive a $10,000 grant from the Environmental Institute for Golf, the philanthropic arm of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). With news of the award the Connecticut State Golf Association contributed another $5,000 in support of the CAGCS. “We have outstanding golf course superintendents in Connecticut who are among the na- tion’s best in soil science and turf management,” said CSGA Executive Director Mike Moraghan (left, below with CAGCS President Marc Weston). “It is a privelege to associate with this group of experts, and we enthusiastically support their work.” The funding has helped launch a Best Management Practices (BMP) project that the CAGCS has embarked upon in partnership with the University of Connecticut. Led by Pete Gorman, su- perintendent at Pine Orchard Yacht and Country Club in Branford, the state’s project will be a be a study to provide guidelines for a full range of course main- tenance practices. “We want Connecticut to be at the forefront of the BMP project,” said Gorman. “We want to be a resource for other states and other industries going forward. The funding is helping all of us be leaders in best management practices, such as water conserva- tion and all environmental topics. It’s a commitment- to our profession.” I t is the USGA’s highest volunteer honor. And though this year’s winner of the Joe Dey Award has done most of his volunteering in Virginia, Gib Palmer has deep roots in Connecticut. A West Hartford native, Palmer is the son of Russ Palmer, CSGA Executive Director from 1986-1996, the eponym of next month’s Russell C. Palmer Cup at the Country Club of Farming- ton. Palmer, who lives in Midlothian, Virginia, was president of the Virginia State Golf Associa- tion from 2014-2015. A member at Salisbury Country Club, Palmer has served on the USGA’s Junior Championship Committee since 1996. During that time, he worked as a rules official at nearly 20 U.S. Junior Amateur Championships while also volunteering at numerous other USGA events. Palmer remains a member of the VSGA’s Board of Directors and was instrumental in the establishment of the Virginia Golf Hall of Fame. He played a key role in integrating the VSGA’s Women’s Division into the organization as a whole, and was a driving force behind the bulding of a dedicated VSGA headquarters in Midlothian. “I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Dey many years ago, and there is no one who better represented integrity, honesty and respect for the game,” Palmer said. “To be associated with his reputation is a tremendous honor and I’m incredibly thankful for this recognition.” Three CT Caddies Receive Evans Scholarships C addies from Meriden, Stamford and Easton have won Evans Scholarships, administred by the Western Golf Association.
